Arrival in Tunis, transfer to hotel for check-in, dinner and overnight.

Excursion to Carthage, the ancient city which once rivalled Rome until its ultimate defeat in the Punic Wars. Visit the ruins before continuing to the picturesque village of Sidi Bou Said. Visit the National Museum and free time in the old Medina before returning to Tunis.

Drive to Bizerte on the coast, and explore the old port, and the 17th century Kasbah. Continue to Tabarka, a seaside resort tucked between the mountains and the Mediterraean. Check-in for dinner and overnight stay.

Check-out and drive to Ain Draham, whose unique buildings have steeply sloped roofs to cope with winter snow common in the mountains. Continue to the ruins of Bulla Regia, unusual in that the Romans here adopted the local custom of building homes underground to avoid the heat. Continue to Dougga, which has the best Roman and Byzantine ruins in Tunisia, as well as a pre-Carthaginian mausoleum. Then continue to Hammamet for dinner and overnight.

Morning drive to Kairouan, a purely Arab city filled with outstanding examples of Islamic architecture. Continue to Sbeitla, site of the Roman City of Sufetula, and then on to Gafsa for check-in to your hotel.

Morning at leisure, or optional 4WD excursion. Then drive south into spectacular mountain scenery, visiting the mountain oasis of Tamerza, along with Mides and Chebika, an ancient village called Ad Speculum by the Romans. Continue to Nefta, a small remote oasis town crowned with the white domes of Zaouias sanctuaries. Continue to Tozeur for dinner and overnight.

Morning visit the old town of Tozeur, little changed since the 14th century. Then cross the Chott El Jerid, the largest of the dry salt lakes in Tunisia, which become inland seas during the winter rains. Arrive in Douz, a typical desert village of sand-coloured homes, a narrow maze of streets and palm-filled oases, then continue to Matmata, center of the troglodyte pit homes built by the Berbers to escape the extremes of weather. Scenes from Star Wars were filmed here.

Drive to the Berber village of Medenine, famous for its Ghorfas, ancient wheat granaries built in the rocks. Drive to Ksar Hadada, the most picturesque granary, built of overlapping vaults stacked on top of each other. Afterward, drive to Chenini, a village perched high on a ridge and embedded in the mountains. Continue to Tataouine, the most picturesque towns of the south east.

Visit Tataouine, then drive along El Kantara, the Roman road to the island of Djerba. The island was mentioned in Homer''s Odyssey, and is a wonderfully picturesque place of traditional architecture, pottery makers and fabulous souks.

Full day to explore Djerba on your own, or optional tour to Pink Flamingo Island, a secluded island of pristine white sand beaches and emerald sea.

Depart by ferry to Gabes, and visit Souk Jara, its famous market. Continue to El Jem - ancient Thysdrus - to see the largest and most spectacular Roman amphitheatre in North Africa, a UNESCO World Heritage. Continue to Monastir and along the coast to Sousse, for dinner and overnight.

Transfer to Tunis airport for departure flight.
