Komodo and Flores
Indonesia 17-26 Jun 2010

Indonesia sits on the southern edge of the Pacific’s “Ring of Fire” – the most active volcanic regions in the world. This is an expedition to the some of the most exciting and sites in the vast Indonesian archipelago, starting from the tourist island of Bali, to the Komodo National Park with its famous Dragons – the world’s largest lizards – and on the island of Flores with its cloud forests and colour-changing volcanic lakes. More than just spectacular scenery and wildlife, this trip offers and opportunity to come face-to-face with some of the isolated ethnic tribes of Indonesia.

Itinerary

17 Jun Arrive Bali

Arrive Bali by this date. For those arriving at Denpasar airport this afternoon, transfers will be provided to your hotel. Meet your Tour Manager in the evening for a briefing.

18 Jun Bali - Labuan Bajo - Rinca

Check-out in the morning and transfer to the airport for the short flight to Labuan Bajo on the island of Flores. Here we will board a converted fishing boat and proceed to Rinca, one of the many islands in the Komodo National Park. Rinca’s landscape is mainly open grassland, and the island is home to a large number of deer, wild horses and buffaloes, monkeys, and the top predator – the Komodo Dragon. We take a walk on the islands trails to try to spot these animals, before returning to the boat to cool off with some swimming and snorkeling. Overnight on the boat.

19 Jun Rinca - Komodo - Labuan Bajo

In the morning we take the boat to Komodo, to watch more of the Komodo Dragons here. We also visit the Komodo Nature Park Museum, before departing. Stop at Pantai Merah – a beach of pink coloured sand – before arriving back at Labuan Bajo.

20 Jun Labuan Bajo - Ruteng

Flores is a big, ruggedly beautiful island. The road inland from Labuan Bajo winds as it climbs across the undulating mountain ridges, and we follow it to Ruteng, the main inland market town in western Flores. The town is surrounded by lingko – spider-web shaped rice fields – cultivated mainly by the Manggarai hill people.

21 Jun Ruteng - Bajawa

In the early morning we visit the Ruteng Nature Conservation Park, home of Ngkiong, the endemic song bird and a newly-formed volcano. Then we continue to Bajawa, a small hill town which is the trading centre of the Ngada people. There are beautiful panoramic views of the rugged backbone of Flores on this route, and we will make stop enroute at Danau Ranamese, a crater lake surrounded by jungle-clad hills. After lunch in Bajawa, visit the Ngada villages of Naru, which has huge megalithic monuments and Wogo, a large village with traditional ngadhu and bhaga structures associated with particular family groups in the village.
